Analysis of Peter and Septimus in Mrs. Dalloway

In Mrs. Dalloway Wolf tends to explore the inner world of Characters and took use of time, and characters’ experience to interconnect the minds of different protagonists in the novel through stream of consciousness. “Her novel examines the governing class's control over English society in the period immediately following the First World War, showing how coercive the ideal of stoical fortitude nurtured during the War” (Zwerdling 69). As Septimus and Peter are characters with no contact and no intersections at all in the novel, but how Wolf interconnected their minds and awareness together to show the temporal reality and pursuit of freedom and liberated existence is a problem now. The answer must be the stoical fortitude. This essay will analyze how Wolf connected the caves, the minds and consciousness of two characters--Peter and Septimus.

First they all persistently pursue what they really want in their lives and want to get rid of the life’s bound-ness like reality, desperation, pressure and solitude given by the outside world. For Peter, he cannot decide Clarissa’s choice for her future’s marriage and her sense of reality for desiring the life-style of upper-class. Although he had a very romantic relationship with her ever, he had to be confronted with the reality that Clarissa would prefer the high quality life style of upper-class, which could make her feel un-dangerous. Therefore, when he saw Richard and Clarissa, he suddenly got the sense that they would marry each other, which he can not control with helplessness. While Septimus is a veteran witnessing his dear comrade’s death in World war I, which left unforgettable cruel shadow in his life after the war. Although he married his wife, he did not fall with her at all. He lives himself as a person with mental disorder, abandoned by the outside world. His traumatic experience prompted his hatred for humanity, warfare and fighting. What he did is talking to nobody but himself without notice of others’ words, as if he was just floating and wandering outside the whole world. For example, as Wolf described in the novel, “But her husband, for they had been married four, five years now, jumped, started, and said, “All right!” angrily, as if she had interrupted him.” Isolation and desperation are approaching to him because of his unbelievable experience in the post war.

Second they both never surrender to the reality, the pressure brought by the upper-class and life’s frustrations. For example Peter could directly criticize Clarissa’s vanity and desire for upper-class superficial and fictitious life just as Wolf depicted in the novel that “Never should she forget all that! Cold, heartless, a prude, he called her.” Peter despised Clarissa’s vanity and hypocritical attitude towards life. As for Septimus, when he saw DR.Holmes and Sir. William, what he perceived was the abominable humanity nature. He did not want to be controlled by them. Actually he wants to live in the world, but not to be interrupted by them as his wife wants to ask help from these two persons to cure him. Though he attempts to believe that life is good, the sun hot, he could not bear that human nature is on people. After the war, he seems to forget how to live a life and the abominable psychologist strongly believe he

B.Septimus : 他在战争中受过伤，有mental ill， 经常和他的死人朋友说话， 他的这种受伤使他厌恶人性之恶（比如人类发起战争，屠杀 tear others into pieces）。他留恋生活的美好，但是despite人性，不仅仅别人，即便是自己（娶了妻子并不是出自爱她）也不例外。他看到DR. Holmes和Sir.
