Industry Convergence
1. Definition of Convergence
Industrial convergence refers to "one industry inter-penetrates with another industry or one sector intersects with another sector in the same industry and eventually blend" (Zhu Ruibo, 2006, P25). Then, gradually the dynamic development of new industry forms. Industrial convergence can be divided into three categories: industry penetration, industry crossover and industry restructuring.The relevance among the industries and the pursuit for the benefit maximization is the inner motivation of industry convergence and development.
2. Imperative for the Convergence
There are mainly four factors contributing to the industry convergence.
2.1 Technology Innovation
"Technology innovation develops alternative or relevant technology, process and products, and then blend them into other industries through penetration and diffusion, which changes the technical route of the product or service of the original industry"(Yin Li and Zang Xuheng, 2008, P36). Affected by this, the production and cost functions of the original industry change, so as to provide the power for industry convergence. Meanwhile, technology innovation changes the characteristics of the market demand and brings new market demand to the products of the original industry, so that the industry convergence has the market space. The spread of important technical innovation in different industries leads to the technical fusion which makes the different industries lay the common technology base and blurs the boundaries among different industries. Ultimately, industrial convergence emerges as the time requires. For example, information technology revolution which have begun since 1970s changes the time, space and cost to get three kinds of basic information: text, images and sound. With the the fusion of information technology in each industry and the development of local area network (LAN) and WLAN, each industry puts great efforts on advocating the on-line information treatment system in such aspects as the the customer management, production management, financial management, storage management and transportation management, so that the customer can get the information, products and services they want anytime and anywhere, which blurs the boundaries among the industries.Since 1990s, industrial convergence becomes the trend of the global industry development. The main reason lies in the technology innovation happening in all fields, and the catalysts- communication and the information technology integrating various kinds of innovative technologies is maturer and maturer. As new leading information industries, they develop at the speed rate of 30% every year in recent years and technology fusion resulted from the information revolution has spread to each industry, leading to big fusion among the industries. Technology innovation and technology fusion catalyse the industrial convergence and development. The industry convergence based on the technology innovation and technology fusion is "the the fundamental changes of traditional industrial system and is the historical mark of new industrial revolution", becoming the new power driving the industry development and economic growth.
