Over the recent years, there have been an increasing number of engineers serving as voluntourists. First emerging in the UKand EU area, volunteer tourism has been expanding to a wide scope of countries throughout the globe. With the ever growing of voluntourists, there is also a great increase in volunteer tourism organizations. However, this trend also draws attention from the public and opinions towards whether engineers should be voluntourists divide. As far as the author is concerned, engineers could accumulate experience and gain skills through acting as voluntourists, so engineers should be voluntourists. Volunteer tourism refers to those “tourists who volunteer for part or all of their travel” in other countries (Wearing and McGehee, 2013). As it becomes more and more popular, debate over the motivation begins to emerge. The focus is self-interest or altruism. In this area, engineers have caused more controversy since they usually have high professionalism.
This paper holds a positive attitude towards engineers being voluntourists. There are mainly three reasons, which will be explained in detail as follows.
Firstly, voluntourist service could help engineers accumulate experience, develop skills and become more employable after they come back to their motherland. According to a research that focuses on the impact of voluntary work on the voluntourists, international experience did help a lot in developing skills. Nearly all the participants admitted that they had benefited much and gained some skills which could not be acquired at home. With these skills and experience, engineers could become more employable in the job market (The Volunteer Engineer: Gaining Skills Abroad).
Secondly, voluntourist service turns out to be a good way for engineers to taste different cultures as well as learn from their counterparts in other countries (Wearing and McGehee, 2013). Based on the research conducted by “Chartered Management Institute and Voluntary Service Overseas”, almost all the members investigated said that they became more capable of handling varied cultures, while third fourths realized that they had become good communicators (Wearing and McGehee, 2013). As held by Wearing S. and McGehee N. G. (2013), the “participation in voluntary tourism” could change the behaviours of voluntourists after their returning home as a result of network extension and experience expansion.
Thirdly, voluntary work is not only beneficial for engineers themselves, but also contributes to the community development. Since engineers have great professionalism and advanced knowledge in their fields, they can push the advancement of impoverished or lagged-behind communities (Kevin, 2009). In this way, the voluntary engineers and local residents being served can work hands in hands and together facilitate the local development. Further, helping the impoverished regions is also an effective way to create a fair and peaceful world of mutual development.
