TOK Essay

  6. “How do we know we can see patterns that are there or not? And are we seeing patterns or creating?” Discuss knowledge questions raised by this idea in two areas of knowledge.

In an unfamiliar and chaotic environment, people tend to find familiar elements and formulate patterns that make sense to them. For instance, when we encountered the concept of vector for the first time in our IB math class, most of us would try to solve the problem with the known, such as plotting coordinates on x-y grids, with the existing multiple planes that confused us. Essentially, humans are born with the innate ability to observe patterns with different ways of knowing in the natural world. Their observation of these patterns depends on their upbringing and experiences; ultimately, this ability helps humans make sense of life by protecting them and aiding them in their survival and in the process of reproduction. Therefore, it is human evolution that led to people to be more inclined to make the “practical” choices that could potentially minimize risks and prevent danger, even if those “right” actions are not necessarily “truthful”. However, people sometimes over interpret patterns that do not exist, while other times they discern patterns that are actually there, which can be even worse when they are disadvantaged or unprepared. Also, knowledge bias that arises from a particular pattern is problematic among various disciplines and cultural backgrounds. Such beliefs are demonstrated in both scientific and religious context; indeed, the pattern-seeking instinct is both humans’ greatest power yet also our greatest weakness.

According to evolutionism, it refers to find out the scientific and systematic development of life and behavior. However, scientist and scholars have discovered countless patterns in the scientific world about nature, like the periodic table, the Fibonacci number and tidal wave movements. Indeed, humans are adept at finding patterns from irregular noise. As we can see, nature encourages human being’s creativity. For example, conventionally, economists and e-commerce practitioners use statistic modelling to analyze existing data. However, the concept of big data has now been introduced, a mass set of data that does not rely on a long range nor carefully designed analysis plan, but literally looks for patterns, albeit for a purpose. This method allows the customers to see both the raw material and the end result. Therefore, instead of previously being mere assemblers, data analysts have now become the creators.[1] Recently, with the sufficient aid of big data, Alibaba’s double 11 event in China was able to hit its new peak of gross merchandise volume (GMV) by making $17.8 billion. With the goal of maximizing profit, Alibaba focused exclusively on big data, which was the key that consolidates other technological processes including cloud computing, AI, smart logistics and digital entertainment.[2] The value of big data has been found and approved. Based on the data of business, all industries including financial industry will develop vigorously. Big data provides powerful financial resources by the data bits. Big data combined with cloud computing can provide accurate marketing target and personalized custom services, can also be fully excavated appeared customer demand behind a lot of implicit demand (Huang & Wang, 2015). For implicit demand, big data can provide high quality of service than expected. The value scope will be expanded unlimited. A lot of the value used to sink previously can re-find the docking of supply and demand, and find their real positions. All of the value optimizes resources allocation.
