1 Idioms and Their Significance
1.1 Definition of idioms
HU Zhuang-lin said: "English Idioms in both semantic and syntactic restrictions on word of a special class." Professor Lin Chengzhang is defined in English idiom: "The English idiom is a fixed set of words or a single words, or even a sentence, has a special structure and can not be inferred from its meaning. "talking animal idioms in this paper, including idioms, idioms, slang and twisters, which are created by the British people for their valuable cultural wealth.
1.2 The significance of animal idioms
The image of animal idioms its rich, unique features and its expression in the English language ability plays an important role in the formation of readers in mind a vivid image of the concrete. Idioms "like a cat on the hot bricks" is a good example. According to this description the reader can well imagine the scene at that time, translated into Chinese is "pins and needles."
2, a major factor in Translation
2.1 Common barriers
Since the English idioms reflect the unique culture, the translator should try to maintain the original charm, retaining its rich cultural characteristics and cultural connotations. But the translators often encounter some obstacles, such as the semantic meaning does not match or vacancies. The main reason to generate these obstacles is the British people the differences in many aspects, such as economic, cultural, geographical or bad environment, living customs.
Word 2.2 does not match
Word match is in English, a word literally means the same meaning but contains a little bit different or completely different. To "dog" for example, in the majority of English Idioms "dog" usually contain compliment, for example, a lucky dog lucky, a top dog winner, every dog has its day Every dog has his early days. British people love dogs famous for their good friend's name even named for the dog. However, in Chinese, dogs are usually derogatory, such as the following expression: Gouzhangrenshi, dog, dogs bark.
2.3 Semantic vacancies
In English, some animals have a unique cultural significance of the image, but the Chinese did not correspond to an extension of the meaning or significance of the image. For example: in the Bible and Greek mythology, animals, such as nightingal (Nightingale) is the meaning of the detective; Swan (Swan) distinguished poet or a singer.
3 Basic Translation
Much in common with Chinese and British people are very helpful for translation. Translation of animal idioms have some basic strategies such as literal translation, free translation, and sets of translation, can better translation.
3.1 literal translation
Translation of the two peoples have in common is the foundation. When the two parties with the same kind of animal to express the same or similar image, to use the literal translation, for example, are used "pig" to show that the "obese", with "sheep" to mean "docile." Literal translation has many advantages, it maintains the original form, not in the sense of confusion and misunderstanding, such as "as fat as pig" can be translated as "with the same fat pig." "As gentle as a lamb" is "as gentle with the sheep." Literal translation can be accurate and effective expression of the original culture, narrowing the gap between the two languages. The reader can easily understand the rich cultural connotation and metaphor translation. And it maintains the original charm, image and expressive. To "as proud as apeacock" as an example, imagine the peacock look like: beautiful, elegant. If someone has been likened to "as proud as a peacock", we can through this clever and vivid metaphor to imagine how proud he was in the end. In addition to a literal translation of Chinese into the new vocabulary. For example: "dark horse" refers to the little-known candidate unexpectedly won, in Chinese we call "dark horse." Literal translation has its flaws, if you use the wrong words will lead to misunderstandings cause confusion. The "white elephant", for example, can not be simply translated as "white elephant" because the Chinese people, white elephant does not make sense, does not contain any culture, we should consider another translation.
3.2 free translation
When there are differences between English and Chinese place, you can consider free translation. Such as the "white elephant" should be translated as "waste, something big elephant" instead of "white elephant." Able to accurately paraphrase the original meaning of the expression of an effective, such as "do the donkey work" meaning do menial work, the reader familiar with these translations can easily understand them. But the disadvantage is that it lays down the image of the original animal, reducing the expression of force, such as "my old servant never left me, he was as faithful as a dog" can be translated "my old servant, never leave me, he told me very loyal.
